Converted vehicles fall into a grey area in most states. Montana handles them. Here is what you need to know.
A school bus that has been converted into a living space (often called a skoolie) and a cargo trailer converted into a toy hauler or camper both present the same problem at most state DMVs: the vehicle title says one thing (bus, cargo trailer, commercial vehicle) and the current use says another (recreational vehicle, motorhome, personal transport). Many state DMVs do not have a clear process for this situation and reject applications, ask for re-inspection, or classify the vehicle under a commercial category that carries much higher registration fees.
The chain of title for a converted school bus usually starts with a school district or commercial fleet auction. The vehicle will have a commercial title, a VIN, and a weight rating based on its original configuration. A toy hauler converted from a cargo trailer will have a cargo trailer title. Neither title says RV or motorhome, which is what the owner wants to drive and insure it as.
Montana Motor Vehicle Division evaluates converted vehicles based on current configuration rather than original title type in many cases. A school bus with a completed interior conversion (sleeping area, galley, and living space) can in many cases be titled and registered as a motor home in Montana, which carries standard personal vehicle registration fees rather than commercial rates. The key supporting documents are: original commercial title showing the vehicle VIN and prior ownership chain, photos of the completed conversion interior showing the residential configuration, bill of sale from the most recent sale, weight ticket showing current GVWR, and proof of insurance under the new classification.
Because Montana evaluates each converted vehicle individually, the Montana LLC path is well-suited for skoolies and converted toy haulers. The LLC owns the vehicle. Montana registers it. No sales tax on the purchase. The annual registration fee is based on Montana RV or motorhome schedule rather than a commercial vehicle schedule.
Each conversion situation is slightly different. Tell us about your vehicle (what it started as, what it is now, and what documentation you have) and we will tell you exactly what Montana needs from you to get it registered.
