Vehicle registration and title paperwork involves terms that are not self-explanatory. This glossary covers the most common ones you will run into when forming a Montana LLC or transferring a vehicle title.

Title & Ownership Terms

Certificate of Title
The official state document that identifies the legal owner of a vehicle. Required to transfer ownership or register a vehicle in any state.

The document a manufacturer issues for a brand-new vehicle that has never been titled. Must be submitted to the state DMV to obtain a first title.
Lien
A legal claim on a vehicle by a lender. A lien appears on the title and must be released before a clean title can be issued.
Clear Title
A title with no outstanding liens or legal claims. A vehicle with a clear title can be sold or transferred without lender involvement.
Bonded Title
A title issued when the original title is lost or unavailable and ownership cannot be clearly established. The owner purchases a surety bond equal to a percentage of the vehicle value. Montana accepts bonded titles.
Salvage Title
A title issued after an insurance company declares a vehicle a total loss. Salvage-titled vehicles require a rebuilt title before returning to the road in most states.
Rebuilt Title
A title issued after a salvage-titled vehicle has been repaired and passes a state inspection.
