Bonded Title for Vehicle Registration

Bought a car, truck, or motorcycle without a clear title? A bonded title may be the path to legal registration. We can help you through it.

What Is a Bonded Title?

A bonded title is a state-issued vehicle title that carries a notation indicating ownership was established through a surety bond rather than a standard title transfer. It is used when a vehicle chain of title is broken. The original title is lost, the seller could not provide documentation, or the vehicle changed hands informally without paperwork.

The process works like this: you obtain a valuation for the vehicle, purchase a surety bond equal to 1.5 to 2 times that value from a licensed bond company, and submit the bond along with an application to your state DMV. If no one successfully challenges ownership within the bond period (typically 3 to 5 years depending on the state), the title converts to a standard clean title.

Who Needs a Bonded Title?

Common situations include buying a vehicle at auction without a title packet, inheriting a vehicle where the estate cannot locate the original title, purchasing a barn find from a private seller who lost the paperwork decades ago, or buying a repossessed vehicle where the lender title documentation is incomplete.

Montana and No-Title Vehicles

Montana accepts alternative title documentation in certain situations and handles surplus military vehicles, classic barn finds, and other no-title cases on a case-by-case basis. If your vehicle is eligible, the Montana LLC path may be faster than a home-state bonded title process. We evaluate each vehicle individually and tell you which path makes more sense for your situation.
